The Mitsubishi 4M40 is a 2.8-liter, inline-four, turbocharged diesel engine produced from 1993 to 2003. It served as the successor to the 4D56 in larger Mitsubishi SUVs and commercial vehicles, powering the Pajero (Montero), Delica, and L200 (Strada).

The 4M40 was developed to address the 4D56’s limitations, offering significantly more low-end torque and improved highway cruising capability. It features a larger turbocharger and intercooler for enhanced performance. Known for robust reliability, the 4M40 can achieve high mileage with proper maintenance. However, common issues include cylinder head cracking from overheating and injection pump wear. It was eventually replaced by the more advanced 4M41 common-rail diesel. Despite its age, the 4M40 remains popular in off-road and overland circles for its strong torque delivery, simplicity, and durability in demanding conditions.
