The 1KZ-TE marked Toyota’s transition from purely mechanical diesel injection to electronic control, improving driveability and cold-start performance. Known for strong low-end torque and reliable performance, it became a favorite for off-road and overland applications. However, the aluminum cylinder head is susceptible to cracking if the engine overheats, making proper cooling system maintenance critical. While less powerful than modern common-rail diesels, the 1KZ-TE remains highly regarded for its mechanical simplicity, durability, and ability to achieve 400,000+ kilometers with diligent care.
